From the 2007 launch to the China-built Edge L, a crossover that sat between the Escape and the Explorer and changed shape with every generation.
The Ford Edge is a mid-size crossover SUV that Ford launched for the 2007 model year. It sits between the Escape and the Explorer, and its North American version was built until April 2024. A third generation, sold in China as the Edge L, followed in 2023.
Ford's Edge arrived for the 2007 model year and took its name from a trim package on the Ford Ranger. It sat between the Escape and the Explorer in Ford's line-up, and it was the company's first mid-size crossover in North America. North American production ended in April 2024, while a China-built Edge L now carries the nameplate forward.
Where did the Ford Edge come from?
The Edge was first shown at the 2006 Detroit show, and production began that January for the 2007 model year. Ford built the first two generations at its Oakville Assembly plant in Ontario. The car borrowed its underpinnings from the Ford Fusion sedan.
A rebadged version went to Lincoln as the MKX, and from 2019 the same car was sold as the Lincoln Nautilus. The Lincoln twin received the same styling refresh and touch controls, so the two models moved forward in step.
A crossover that began as a trim name on a pickup and ended its North American run after nearly two decades of sales.
How did the first generation change over its life?
The first Edge launched with an SE, SEL, SEL Plus and Sport line-up, and the SEL Plus gave way to the Limited trim in 2008. The original model used a 6F50 six-speed automatic as standard, with dual front airbags, side-curtain airbags, electronic stability control and a tyre-pressure monitoring system.
A facelift revealed at the 2010 Chicago Auto Show brought a new front fascia, new wheels and a revised bumper. Inside, capacitive touch controls replaced some conventional buttons and switches. The 2011 Edge became the first Ford offered with Sync 2 or MyFord Touch, which was standard on Limited models.
What engines did the Edge offer?
The updated first generation offered a 2.0 L EcoBoost four, a 3.5 L Duratec V6 and a 3.7 L V6 in the Sport. The 3.5 L Duratec produced 285 hp (213 kW) and 253 lb-ft (343 N-m) of torque. The Sport's 3.7 L V6 made 305 hp (227 kW) and 280 lb-ft (380 N-m).
The turbocharger in the updated 2.0 L engine was designed for 150,000 miles or 10 years. The 3.5 L Duratec also earned a place among the world's 10 Best Engines, named by Ward.
What changed with the second generation?
The 2015 redesign brought a Taurus and Explorer-style grille, new headlights, LED combination taillights, more interior room and a rear-view camera. The new 2.0 L EcoBoost used a twin-scroll turbocharger to lift low-end torque, and it could tow 3500 lb where the old engine could not.
A 3.5 L V6 sat in the middle of the range, while the Sport models used a 2.7 L twin-turbo EcoBoost V6. Later the top model became the ST, with a 2.7 L engine producing 335 hp (250 kW) and 20 hp more than the 2018 Sport it replaced.
Did the Ford Edge sell in Europe?
Ford did sell the Edge in Europe, starting with the second generation under its One Ford strategy. It sat above the Kuga and was positioned as a premium large crossover. Only diesel engines were offered, paired with all-wheel drive as standard, and prices ran about 50% higher than in North America.
Sales were limited in 2019 to a few countries, and the last stock was sold in early 2021. The European range had been built around two Duratorq diesels rated at 180 hp and 210 hp, and the choice of gearbox decided which output a buyer received.
What is the Edge L?
The Edge L is the third-generation Edge, revealed on 23 February 2023 for China and built by Changan Ford, a joint venture between Ford and Changan Automobile. It replaced the Edge Plus, the China-only three-row model that received its own facelift for the 2021 model year.
The Edge L grows to a longer body, 22.1 cm (8.7 in) longer than the previous Edge, and it uses a large interior dominated by screens. Its 12.3-inch gauge cluster and 13.2-inch central touchscreen are standard, while an optional 27-inch 4K screen spans the dashboard.
Which trims did the Ford Edge come in?
The first generation came in SE, SEL, SEL Plus and Sport forms, and the 2008 Limited replaced the SEL Plus. The Sport trim debuted at the 2008 Chicago Auto Show and went on sale as a 2009 model. It wore 20-inch chrome-clad wheels with 22-inch wheels optional.
Later editions were regional. The Edge Plus in China and the Endura in Australia each carried their own trim and equipment choices, covered in the sections below.
What did the 2019 facelift change?
For the 2019 model year the Edge received a revised front grille, optional aluminium wheels and new exterior colour choices. A 12-speaker B&O Play surround-sound system replaced the earlier Sony audio. Every model also gained an 8F35 eight-speed automatic, which helped the base engine's output and fuel economy.
The base 2.0 L EcoBoost turbocharged four gained a 5-horsepower (3.7 kW) boost, and EPA fuel economy improved. Dual-zone automatic climate control came standard on all trims for the 2020 model year, when the CD player was removed.
Safety also moved forward. The 2019 Edge added post-collision braking, which applies brake pressure automatically when a collision is detected, along with evasive steering assist and adaptive cruise control with stop-and-go lane centering.
What safety equipment did the Edge carry?
The first generation's safety kit covered front and side airbags, curtain airbags for the outer occupants, antilock brakes, traction and stability control, and tyre-pressure monitoring. Those items formed the core of the car's safety package from the day it went on sale.
The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety later gave its Top Safety Pick award to models built after January 2007. The 2019 update then added three new technologies to that record, each one new for the model year.
What was the HySeries concept?
HySeries was a concept version of the Edge, shown at the 2007 Washington Auto Show with hydrogen fuel and plug-in charging. Its lithium-ion battery pack gave a combined range over 320 kilometres (200 mi). The system first appeared in the Ford Airstream concept at the 2007 Detroit auto show.
A gasoline-electric hybrid was also planned for the 2010 model year. It was expected to pair an electric motor with a V6, but that version was later cancelled and never went on sale.
How did the Edge Plus differ in China?
The Edge Plus was a three-row model built only for China, and its 2021 facelift gave it a new exterior, a different interior and two displays measuring 8 and 13.2 inches. It was powered by a 2.0 L turbo four rated at 245 PS (242 hp; 180 kW), paired with an eight-speed automatic.
Both front-wheel drive and all-wheel drive were offered. The centre console combined the climate controls and air vents, and a cover below it hid a power socket, a single USB port and a wireless charger. The Edge Plus also used a squared-off multi-function steering wheel.
What is inside the Edge L?
The Edge L uses a 12.3-inch digital gauge cluster behind its squared steering wheel, with a 13.2-inch touchscreen as standard equipment. Another option is a 27-inch 4K display that stretches across the dashboard, with the left half running the infotainment system and the right half serving passengers.
Other equipment includes three-zone climate control, interior ambient lighting, active noise cancellation, 4G connectivity with over-the-air updates, an optional head-up display, an optional panoramic sunroof and an optional Bang and Olufsen audio system. Optional Level 2 semi-autonomous driving features round out the list.
How did the Edge become the Endura in Australia?
In Australia the Edge was sold as the Ford Endura, positioned as the successor to the Ford Territory. The 2018 model reached Australia first, and New Zealand received it in February 2019. The Endura came in Trend, ST-Line and Titanium trims.
New Zealand dropped the car before the Australian run ended, and the Endura was discontinued in Australia by the end of 2020. The Endura name therefore covered only a few model years in Australia.
What engines does the Edge L offer?
The standard Edge L engine is a 2.0 L turbocharged four-cylinder that makes 245 hp (183 kW; 248 PS) and 279 lb-ft (378 N-m) of torque. It drives through an eight-speed automatic, and the engine sits transversely across the car. Buyers can also choose mechanical all-wheel drive.
The hybrid version uses a similar engine with an electric motor, linked through a planetary eCVT. Hybrid versions are offered in China, and in the Mexican and Panamanian markets the hybrid is the only option.
How long did each generation last?
The first generation arrived for the 2007 model year and was revised in 2010 for the 2011 model year. The second generation followed for 2015, and North American production of that car ended on 26 April 2024. The third generation was revealed for China in 2023.
