A Model 3 derivative that grew into the best-selling electric vehicle of all time, through a 2025 refresh, a long-wheelbase Model Y L and a run of safety scrutiny.
The Tesla Model Y is an electric compact SUV launched in 2020 and now the best-selling EV ever. It shares most of its parts with the Model 3, comes in rear and all-wheel drive, and was joined by the longer Model Y L in 2025. Its record sales were followed by safety scrutiny.
The Tesla Model Y is a battery electric compact crossover that Tesla has built since 2020, and it became the best-selling electric vehicle of all time. It was presented in March 2019 as the company's fifth production model. Built on the Model 3 platform, it has grown into a family of trims and a longer six-seat variant.
Where did the Model Y come from?
Tesla filed to trademark the name Model Y in 2013. In 2015 Elon Musk teased a Model 3-based crossover with falcon-wing doors, and by 2017 a silhouette of the car had been shown to shareholders at the annual general meeting. Musk later confirmed that the production car would use standard doors instead of the falcon-wing design of the Model X.
Musk announced that the car would be built in a new factory, because the Fremont plant had no room for another line. Plans shifted again in 2019, when production was moved to the Fremont factory, where Model Y production started in January 2020.

How is the Model Y built?
Production spread across several sites. Model Y production started at Fremont in January 2020, with deliveries in the United States beginning in March 2020 for the Long Range AWD and Performance versions. Giga Shanghai added production in December 2020, and Gigafactory Texas began building the car in late 2021.
The Model Y was also the first vehicle to be assembled at Giga Berlin, a plan announced in November 2019. Deliveries from Berlin-Brandenburg started in March 2022, mainly for European markets,.
How does the Model Y compare with the Model 3?
It is derived from the Model 3 sedan and acts as a bigger sibling. Around 76 percent of its parts are shared with the Model 3, and it uses a similar set of exterior and interior styling cues, so the two cars feel closely related on the road.
The Model Y took the Model 3's streamlined form and added a higher roofline and a hatchback-style tailgate. The result has a drag coefficient of 0.23 for the standard car, with smooth body surfacing and mechanical flush door handles that help keep the body clean.
What powertrains and batteries does the Model Y use?
The Model Y comes in rear-wheel drive and dual-motor all-wheel drive. The rear-wheel drive variants use a single rear permanent-magnet synchronous reluctance motor, while all-wheel drive versions add a front induction motor that can be disengaged when its output is not needed.
Battery chemistry varies by trim. Standard range cars use lithium iron phosphate cells, while Long Range and Performance versions use nickel-based NMC cells. Usable capacity runs from about 60 to 81 kWh, and the cars have used several cell formats over their life, including 2170, prismatic LFP and 4680 cells.
Charging is quoted at up to 11.5 kW on AC and up to 250 kW on DC fast charging, with the Standard trim reaching 225 kW. Most markets use the Combined Charging System or the North American Charging Standard.
Why does the Model Y's heat pump matter?
Cabin heating in the Model Y was the first in Tesla's line to rely on a heat pump rather than resistance elements. Tesla's heat pump has also been praised for using far fewer parts than rival designs. Resistance heating can cut range by 40 percent or more below 20 F (minus 7 C), while a heat pump can be up to 300 percent more efficient in the same conditions.
Tesla's system uses a Super Manifold, where the coolant and refrigerant circuits meet, and an Octovalve with eight ports that route coolant around the vehicle. Musk has described the heat pump and the single-piece castings as the two big changes that set the Model Y apart from the Model 3.
Did the Model Y adopt single-piece castings?
Tesla planned to cast the rear body of the Model Y as one piece using a Giga Press supplied by the Italian company Idra. The process unified 70 metal parts into two large castings, and production with the single-piece rear was reported to have started in late December 2020.
In May 2024 Reuters reported that Tesla had abandoned its one-piece gigacasting plans. The cost of the upfront investment and a shift toward autonomous driving appear to have been the main reasons for the change.
What changed in the 2025 refresh?
Tesla launched a refreshed Long Range version on 10 January 2025, internally codenamed Juniper. It gained a full-width light bar as daytime running lights and tail lights, plus a touchscreen for rear passengers, and the range increased from 428 to 447 miles (688 to 719 km).
The refresh also brought a 15.4-inch central touchscreen, ventilated seats and double-layer acoustic glass, while the panoramic roof received a coating that limits heat and UV transmission. Later the Long Range model was renamed the Model Y Premium in North America, after the Model Y Standard arrived.
What is the Model Y L?
The Model Y L is a three-row, six-seat version that debuted in China in June 2025. It is 7.0 in (179 mm) longer than the standard car, with a wheelbase of 119.7 in (3,040 mm), and its redesigned roofline gives it a drag coefficient of 0.216.
The six-seat layout uses two captain chairs in the second row and a 50:50 split-folding third row. The boot offers 2,539 litres (89.7 cu ft), against 2,130 litres (75.2 cu ft) in the standard car, and the Model Y L arrived in Australia and New Zealand on 13 March 2026 as Premium Long Range AWD.
How quick is the Model Y Performance?
The Model Y Performance uses a dual-motor system producing 460 hp (340 kW). Its sprint to 100 km/h takes 3.5 seconds, and its top speed is 155 mph (250 km/h), while the Long Range AWD takes 4.8 seconds for the same sprint and peaks at 125 mph (201 km/h).
The Performance trades a little range for that speed, with a WLTP figure of 360 miles (580 km) against 373 miles (600 km) for the Long Range AWD. It also gained the first vehicle-to-load and vehicle-to-home bi-directional charging in the Model Y line.
What did the Model Y Standard leave out?
The Model Y Standard arrived in October 2025 as the cheapest version, initially with rear-wheel drive only. It dropped the lightbar, used 18-inch wheels and half-textile upholstery, and reduced the speaker count from 15 to 7, while the trim also lost the FM and AM radio.
Other losses included ambient lighting, power folding mirrors, rear heated seats and the rear seat infotainment screen. The maximum charging power fell to 225 kW from 250 kW, and the car used passive shock absorbers. In North America it retailed for about 5,000 US dollars less than the Premium RWD.
How did the Model Y sell?
The Model Y was the world's best-selling vehicle in 2023, with 1.2 million deliveries, and it was the first electric vehicle to claim the title. Tesla's sales came under pressure in 2024, when the Model Y fell to second behind the Toyota RAV4.
Combined Model 3 and Model Y deliveries fell to about 1.59 million units in 2025. Analysts blamed a mix of brand damage linked to Musk's political activities, an ageing lineup, Chinese competition and the expiry of US tax credits. In 2025 BYD overtook Tesla as the largest battery electric vehicle seller.
How did the Model Y perform in markets around the world?
Australian orders opened on 10 June 2022, with deliveries beginning in August 2022. The Long Range AWD was added in April 2023, and the Performance version moved to production in Berlin, which made Australia an early market for the Model Y L.
In China the Jiangsu province government listed the Model Y as eligible for government purchase in June 2024, the first time a Tesla entered China's official vehicle procurement catalogue. India received the car on 15 July 2025, with units imported from China.
Has the Model Y faced recalls or investigations?
The Model Y has faced scrutiny over its electronic door releases. In September 2025 the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration opened a preliminary evaluation covering about 174,000 model-year 2021 cars after nine reports of parents being unable to reopen exterior doors, four of which involved a broken window.
A separate phantom braking investigation opened in February 2022 covered an estimated 416,000 Model 3 and Model Y cars. Recalls have included more than 370,000 Model 3 and Model Y vehicles over power steering in February 2025, and in August 2026 Tesla started a recall in China to swap out electrically operated door handles.
How did critics receive the Model Y?
Critics praised the Model Y's acceleration, interior space, range and efficiency, but disliked the firm ride, the handling and the styling. Car and Driver and Top Gear both found it capable and practical, and Top Gear said it was a great car to live with.
In February 2024 Consumer Reports put the Model Y on its list of 10 top picks for 2024, making it the sole electric entry. Brand Finance estimated that Tesla's brand value fell about 36 percent in 2025, its third consecutive annual decline.
