The short answer

The Model 3 is Tesla's affordable electric sedan, launched in 2017 as a step below the Model S. It led global plug-in sales from 2018 to 2020, and it became the first electric car to pass 1 million sales in June 2021.

The Tesla Model 3 is a battery electric mid-size fastback sedan that Tesla introduced in 2017 as a more affordable option than its Model S and Model X. It topped global plug-in sales from 2018 to 2020, and in June 2021 it reached 1 million global sales as the first electric car to do so.

Why was the Model 3 created?

Tesla pitched the Model 3 as an affordable route into its range. In a 2006 interview Musk said most people able to buy a new car could afford one, with a target price of $30,000.

The car was part of a three-step plan. Tesla meant to begin with a premium car, then move steadily towards cheaper models, funding battery and drivetrain development through earlier cars such as the Roadster, Model S and Model X.

Early specifications set expectations high. Tesla said the Standard Range version would have an estimated EPA range of 215 miles (346 km), five-passenger seating, front and rear trunks and a drag coefficient of Cd=0.225.

A mass-market electric sedan that proved the market was ready, one reservation at a time.

How big was the demand before the car went on sale?

Tesla reported 325,000 reservations within a week of the 2016 unveiling, and net reservations reached 455,000 by August 2017. Reservations opened on 31 March 2016 with a refundable US$1000 deposit.

More than 115,000 people reserved a car in the day before the unveiling, and two days later the total stood at 232,000. Musk also said 93% of reservations came from buyers who did not already own a Tesla.

Until then, the biggest advance deposit tally belonged to the 1955 Citroen DS, with 80,000 during the Paris Auto Show. The Model 3 had passed that figure in two days.

Why did production take longer than planned?

Tesla's targets slipped repeatedly. Only 260 vehicles were produced in the third quarter of 2017, and only 2,425 in the fourth quarter, well short of the company's goal.

Limited production began in July 2017, with volume output planned to start by September 2017. Tesla blamed bottlenecks and said the underlying supply chain was sound, although analysts were not convinced.

Customer deliveries totalled 1,764 units in 2017, and 1,542 of them were delivered in the fourth quarter. The company had also issued US$2 billion in new shares in May 2016 to help fund the programme.

How big did the Model 3 become?

The Model 3 passed 100,000 global deliveries by October 2018. Its US sales reached 100,000 in November 2018, a faster climb than any earlier plug-in electric model had managed.

In 2018 an estimated 139,782 units were delivered in the US, the first plug-in car to sell more than 100,000 units in a single year. The car led US plug-in sales for twelve months in a row, through that December.

Norway offers a useful benchmark. Its 2019 tally of 15,683 cars was the third largest sales volume in Norwegian history, and in the Netherlands the car set a monthly record of 22,137 registrations for any single plug-in vehicle.

When did the Model 3 overtake the Nissan Leaf?

The Model 3 overtook the Nissan Leaf in early 2020 and took the all-time crown for plug-in sales. Until 2019 the Leaf held that title, with global sales of 450,000 units by December 2019.

Global sales of the Model 3 reached about 814,000 units by December 2020. That year China recorded 137,459 units and the US 95,135.

The Model Y, a crossover built on the Model 3 chassis, later took the top spot. The Model 3 had held first place as the world's top plug-in car for three years before that change.

When did the Model 3 pass one million sales?

Global sales crossed the 1 million mark in June 2021, the first time an electric car had managed it. By then Dutch registrations had passed 78,996, the highest total for any electric model in that country.

In the UK it was the bestselling electric vehicle of 2021, with 34,783 registrations. Its 9,612 December sales that year were more than twice the number of any other car sold in the month.

Rental fleets also bought in volume. In October 2021 Hertz ordered 100,000 Model 3 cars for its rental fleet, although it later resold most of them as demand fell short of expectations.

What makes the Model 3's design distinctive?

The Model 3 has no front grille, because electric cars need less cooling than combustion engines. It is 20% smaller than the Model S but has its own design, with a large glass roof built from the same glass as the Solar Roof.

Design chief Franz von Holzhausen compared it to the Audi A4, BMW 3 Series and Mercedes-Benz C-Class, promising range, affordability and performance in one package. Critics were split, with Motor Trend calling the nose controversial and Robert Cumberford praising the design as excellent.

The cabin is minimalist, with a single 15.4 in (390 mm) centre touchscreen housing most controls. Reviewers praised the interface but noted that simple tasks often require menu navigation rather than a button or knob.

What changed in the 2020 update?

In November 2020 the Model 3 gained styling changes carried over from the Model Y, including black finishes where chrome had been. Buyers also got a heat pump with an octovalve, a power-operated trunk and Qi wireless charging pads.

Some hardware was removed later. The adaptive cruise control radar sensor went in April 2021, the front passenger lumbar support in May 2021, and the park-assist ultrasonic sensors in October 2022, which were replaced by Tesla Vision.

What is the 2023 Highland refresh?

The Highland refresh was announced on 1 September 2023 and brought a longer driving range, lower production costs and a restyled exterior and interior. Tesla said range improved by around 10%, thanks to a lower, more aerodynamic nose, a revised rear diffuser and wheels designed to cut drag.

The tyres protrude slightly from the rims, which protects them from kerbs. They have lower rolling resistance without compromising lateral performance or steering response, and the drag coefficient improved from Cd=0.225 to Cd=0.219.

Interior changes included an 8-inch touchscreen for rear passengers, ventilated front seats, up to 17 speakers and a steering wheel without stalks. Traditional turn signal stalks returned for the 2026 model year.

Where is the Model 3 built?

Gigafactory Shanghai has built the Model 3 since December 2019 for China and for export, except to the United States. The refreshed version sold in North America comes from the Tesla Fremont Factory.

Battery supply varies by plant. Fremont uses 2170-type cells with nickel-cobalt-aluminium chemistry from Panasonic's line at Gigafactory Nevada, while Shanghai uses nickel-cobalt-manganese cells from LG Energy Solution. Lower-cost models use lithium iron phosphate prismatic cells from CATL.

The 2017 build plan was ambitious. In May 2016 Tesla told suppliers it would double earlier Model 3 targets to 100,000 in 2017 and 400,000 in 2018, a goal many experts viewed as unattainable.

What powers the Model 3?

The rear motor uses internal permanent magnets with synchronous reluctance characteristics, and AWD versions add an induction motor on the front axle. Early cars used 2170-type cylindrical cells, and the Standard Range pack holds 2,976 cells in 96 groups of 31.

The Long Range pack holds 4,416 cells in 96 groups of 46 and weighs 480 kg (1,060 pounds). The onboard AC/DC converter is rated at 11 kW, which needs three-phase power in Europe, while single-phase supply gives 7.4 kW.

How quick is the Model 3?

Road testing in Sport mode recorded a 0-60 mph run from standstill that came in under four seconds. The Acceleration Boost upgrade, priced at US$2000 from December 2019, was advertised to cut the Long Range dual-motor 0-60 mph time from 4.4s to 3.9s.

Singapore offers a lower-output RWD 110 with a 110 kW (150 PS) cap, which places it in COE Category A and lowers road taxes. Its 0-100 km/h time is 8.6 s, while the standard Singapore RWD produces 170 kW (231 PS) and does the sprint in 6.1 s.

How safe is the Model 3?

The Model 3 earned five stars in every NHTSA category after 2019 crash testing, and Euro NCAP gave it a 94% active safety score. Its mid-2019 results put adult protection at 96% and child protection at 86%.

Protection for vulnerable road users such as pedestrians scored 74%, and the safety assist mode reached 94%. The car may still lose its Euro NCAP five-star rating in 2026 because it has few physical buttons.

Hidden door handles have drawn attention too. China is banning them over safety concerns, and the company has until January 1, 2027 to revise the design if it wants to keep selling there. Other countries are investigating similar bans.

How reliable is the Model 3?

Reliability reviews have been mixed. A 2024 TUV analysis of inspections in Germany and Austria ranked the Model 3 last among newer cars, partly because the company does not ask for regular servicing.

In Denmark, 23% of 2020 model year cars failed their first inspection in 2024, compared with 9% of electric cars from other brands. Earlier reviews swung both ways, and Consumer Reports changed its verdict more than once between 2018 and 2019.

Consumer Reports rated the car not recommended in May 2018 over braking performance, but Tesla pushed a braking update that weekend. The recommendation was revoked again in February 2019 and reinstated in November 2019, when the car ranked fifth for reliability among twelve compact luxury models.

Has the Model 3 been recalled?

Yes, several times. A December 2021 recall covered 356,309 cars built from 2017 to 2020 because trunk operation could damage the rear camera wiring harness.

Software recalls have been frequent. The February 2023 recall covered Full Self-Driving Beta vehicles in the US and Canada after the regulator warned the system could travel through intersections unlawfully, and an over-the-air fix followed.

In February 2025 more than 370,000 Model 3 and Model Y vehicles were recalled over possible loss of power-assisted steering. In August 2026 the company started a recall in China to swap out its electric door handles.

Did the Model 3 win awards?

Yes, from several countries. Popular Mechanics named it 2018 Car of the Year, and Auto Express and Parkers each named it their car of the year for 2019 and 2020.

The UK Car of the Year 2020 was chosen by a panel of 29 motoring journalists. Edmunds named it the top-rated electric car of 2019, and the IIHS made it a Top Safety Pick+ in late 2019.

Motorsport also took notice. The 2024 STCC series in Scandinavia went fully electric, and Brink Motorsport ran Model 3 based cars, marking Tesla's first step into racing.

What is the Model 3's legacy?

The Model 3 showed that a mass-market electric sedan could sell in large numbers, with about 814,000 units sold worldwide by December 2020. Its volume also shows how quickly a single model can scale once demand arrives.

Vanity Fair drew a line back to the Ford Model T, because both cars were built to put a new kind of transport within reach of ordinary buyers. That link explains why the Model 3 drew so much attention beyond the car press.
